UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -Freshman Kristen Crawford broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 46-feet 7 ½ to win the event on the first day of the Fred Hardy Invitational.
Crawford becomes the second Richmond freshman to break a school outdoor record just two weeks into the season. Fellow freshman Heather Roush broke the school's discus record last week at the UNC-Wilmington Invitational.
"Kristen is throwing six feet farther than she did a year ago in high school," Richmond women's coach Lori Taylor said. "To come back there in the last round of the shot put and come out with a personal best to win the event here at home. That says a lot. It was a big day all around for us in the throws and we expect another big day tomorrow."
Senior Beth Crocus finished second in the hammer throw with a heave of 164-10, coming in behind Pittsburgh's Kimberly Rorabaugh (170-4).
Richmond junior Hunter Willis finished second in the men's 5,000-meter run in a personal best 14:59.41, just three seconds behind VCU's Jay Wyss (14:56.39).
"Hunter ran a good, competitive race throughout, he just got out kicked there over the last 200 meters," Richmond men's coach Steve Taylor said. "That's a good one for him, we're excited for him."
Freshman Amy Van Alstine finished fourth in the women's 5,000 in a time of 18:02.70, behind three runners from William & Mary.
The Richmond men's 4x800 relay team of sophomore Jeff Strojny, sophomore Garrett Graham, sophomore Sean Welsh and junior Jonathan Molz finished second in a time of 7:54.16. Seton Hall won the event in 7:39.43.
"That was a good race for them, that Seton Hall team is quite good," Steve Taylor said. "To place second is great for us."
Sophomore Mary Bertram finished eighth in the women's 5,000 run in 18:44.08 and junior Shelby Faircloth took ninth in 18:54.94.
Freshman Megan Ney placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 5-1, and freshman Kerry Kelly finished 17th in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.72.
"We're really looking forward to tomorrow," Lori Taylor said. "Looking across the board today their were a few facility records and a lot of meet records that were set. It's great to have 20 teams here, this meet keeps getting better."
Field events start at 9 a.m. on Saturday and free video streaming of track events begins at 11 a.m. here at RichmondSpiders.com.
