UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Jessica Young broke the school record, meet record and facility record while taking first in the 100-meter dash on the second and final day of competition at the 3rd Annual Fred Hardy Invitational.
Young ran the 100 dash in 11.70, which breaks the previous school mark of fellow Richmond sophomore Jasmine Major and qualifies her for the NCAA Regional Championships.
Young, who was a NCAA All-American after finishing ninth in the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Indoor National Championships earlier this month, now own school records in the 100, 200, 300 and 400 meters outdoors, along with the 60, 200 and 400 indoors.
"Jessica just keeps showing that she is one of the premier track athletes in the nation.," Richmond women's coach Lori Taylor said.
Young also won the 200 dash in 24.26 seconds and ran a 53-second split as the lead leg in the 4x400 team that set the school record.
Young was followed in the 4x400 relay by freshman Jasmine Cottle, junior Tara Markey and freshman Monique Hawkins. The team finished in 3:49.90, which edged the previous record of 3:49.97 set last spring by Danielle Eaton, Young, Amy Thesing and Markey.
"The 4x4 team did extremely well today and they will only get better," Taylor said.
Freshman Andrew Benford won the 3,000 in 8:38.84, while fellow freshmen Matt Llano and Jon Wilson took fifth and sixth. Llano ran an 8:46.05 and Wilson ran an 8:46.06.
"That was just excellent racing out of those three freshmen," Richmond men's coach Steve Taylor said. "Benford really made great racing decisions out there on a hot day for the 3,000. He ran competitively and executed the race plan perfectly. He moved when it was time. For Wilson, that's a 10-second PR for him. That's just very good racing, they ran tough races."
Junior Jonathan Molz placed fourth in the 1,500 in 3:54.11 and sophomore Garrett Graham just missed his goal of an even 4:00, running a 4:00.01. Sophomore Dan Petty took 30th in 4:16.41.

"That's a good PR for Sean," Steve Taylor said. "They all ran very competitive races."
Freshman Alyssa Mankin took third in the 800 in 2:17.80, Markey placed fifth in 2:18.87 and sophomore Emily Nagle took 16th in 2:25.48. Mankin finished ninth in the 1,500 in 4:41.57 and Nagle took 12th in 4:54.35.
"In 1,500 Lori Taylor said. "Mankin, Nagle and Tara Markey ran really competitive, they just laid it on the line and competed. We've always felt as coaches when our athletes compete and have a purpose, great things happen. That's what took place here today. We're excited about it."
