NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team completed a two-game sweep of Atlantic 10 rival Fordham on Saturday at Captains Park in Newport News, Va.
Richmond clobbered the Rams, 15-1, in game one of the doubleheader before coming from behind to beat Fordham in walk-off fashion, 9-8, in game two.
With the pair of victories, Richmond improves to 12-8 on the season overall and to 4-1 in A-10 conference play. Fordham falls to 8-16 on the year and to 0-2 in league play.
3B Matt Dacey led the offensive charge for the Spiders, combining to go 4-for-9 in the doubleheader with three home runs, six RBI, a double and four runs scored. In game one, 1B Doug Kraeger went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while SS Tyler Beckwith hit a homer and drove in three. OF Tanner Stanley had two RBI and a double for UR in game one.
In game two, OF Jansen Fraser went 3-for-4, including a walk-off double to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Dacey had two homers and drove in four.
On the mound in game one, RHP Ryan Cook (3-1) was masterful, pitching 6.2 shutout innings to earn the win. The senior allowed just one hit while striking out eight batters.
In game two, LHP Zak Sterling had a solid start, tossing five innings of one-run ball. RHP Ray Harron (2-0) earned the win for the Spiders, pitching the final inning.
The Spiders used a pair of big innings in game one to cruise to the victory. With the game scoreless after two, UR plated eight runs in the bottom of the third inning – all with two outs – to seize control.
Three innings later, Richmond pushed its lead to 12-0 with a four-spot in the bottom of the seventh, followed by three more runs in the eighth. Fordham scored one run in the ninth to avoid the shutout, but it would not nearly be enough as UR beat the Rams, 15-1.
Leading 2-1 headed in to the sixth inning of game two, Fordham posted two runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to take a 7-2 lead over the Spiders.
Richmond answered back in the bottom half of the frame, plating three runs to cut the deficit to just two, 7-5. In the seventh for UR, OF Michael Morman, Beckwith and Dacey all had RBI hits for the Spiders.
In the eighth, Richmond narrowed the margin to a run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Stanley, making the Fordham lead 7-6 after eight complete.
In the top of the ninth, Fordham added an insurance run to make the Rams' lead 8-6. Leading off the top of the ninth, Morman drew a five-pitch walk to bring the tying run to the plate in Dacey.
Swinging at the first pitch, Dacey launched a monster, no-doubt homer deep over the fence in right field to tie the game at 8-8. Three batters later, freshman OF Kyle Adams singled to get the winning run on base.
Already with two hits and a double in the game, Fraser came through in the biggest of ways for the Spiders. The junior lined a double to the left-center field fence, scoring Adams all the way from third base to win the game for Richmond, 9-8.
The Richmond Spiders will conclude their three-game, Atlantic 10 series with the Fordham Rams on Sunday at Captains Park in Newport News, Va. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
