RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team got off to a tough start in doubles and never recovered in a 5-2 loss against William and Mary Sunday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts. The Spiders picked up wins at No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles.
 
The Spiders (4-4, 2-1 A-10) lost two of the three doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Marta Buendia (Madrid, Spain) and senior Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.), playing for the first time this season, fell to Mila Saric and Alisia Manolescu, 6-0.
 
Sophomore Andrea Campodonico (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman Sara Salemyr (Stockholm, Sweden) earned a 6-1 win against Elisa Van Meeteren and Raffaela Alhach at No. 2 doubles.
 
In the final doubles match, graduate student Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and senior Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) lost to Jil van den Dungen and Vitoria Okuyama, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.
  
In singles, Alhach won in straight sets against Salemyr, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Zlateva won in straight sets against van den Dungen, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
 
The Tribe took a 3-1 lead after Manolescu won in straight sets against freshman Carly Cohen (Pepper Pike, Ohio), 7-6, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Campodonico won a third set thriller against Van Meeteren 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
 
The Spiders had to win the final two matches but the Tribe came away with wins at No. 4 and No. 1 singles. Freshman Polina Shitikova (Rybinsk, Russia) fell in three sets against Vitoria Okuyama, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Dunbar lost against Saric 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Dunbar battled back from being down 2-5 in the second set and won the second set 7-6 (7-2) but fell short in the third 6-4.
 
Richmond will host Saint Joseph's on Friday, April 16 at 10 a.m. at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
