April 17, 2006
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Prior to the 2006 Spring Game weekend festivities, Richmond football head coach Dave Clawson announced the 2006 Spider Football captains. Rising seniors Judd Altman, Johnny Campbell, Lance Gray and Damien McCallum were all selected in a vote conducted by returning members of 2005 Spider football squad.
Altman, a Third Team All-Conference Offensive Lineman in 2005, helped the Spider offensive unit limit opponents to just 21 sacks, which ranked fifth in the league. Altman, who started all 13 games at right tackle in 2005, helped an offensive front which allowed the Spiders to gain 4,957 yards of total offense, tops all-time at Richmond. The offense averaged 381.3 yards a game which ranked 41st in the country.
Campbell and Gray, both Third Team All-Atlantic 10 defensive selections in 2005, helped the Spider defense rank fourth in the conference and 38th in the country in total defense (339.3 yd/game). The Spider defensive squad also ranked fourth in the conference and 22nd in the nation against the rush (120.1 yd/game). Campbell, who has recorded 70 total tackles (10.5 for loss) in his three-year career, started in all 13 games in 2005 for Richmond.
Gray, who has compiled 240 total tackles in his three years at Richmond, is just 83 stops away from cracking the Spiders' all-time Top-10 list for career tackles. The Mechanicsville, Va., native started all but once in 2005, and was named an Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week following his two-interception performance at Maine, Sept. 17.
McCallum has been a staple on the defensive side of the ball for the Spiders. The defensive back has a total of 147 tackles in his three-year playing career, and recorded a career-high 63 during 2005 season, ranking fifth on the team. The Rowland, N.C., native defended a team-high 12 passes, and recorded his first career interception in the 41-7 win over William & Mary.
The Spiders will open their defense of the 2005 Atlantic 10 Championship, Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006 at Duke. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. Richmond will begin its home schedule, which includes six home games, Saturday, Sept. 16 against VMI at 3 p.m., at UR Stadium.
