SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - The University of Richmond men's golf team shot a two-day total of one-under-par 575 to claim the 17-team Liberty-JAE Classic. Contested at the 6,750-yard, par-72 Sea Trail Golf Club, the Spiders fired even-par 288 in the first round, before closing with a one-under-par 287. Richmond placed 11 shots ahead of second-place finisher and tournament host Liberty (296-290=586, +10).
The victory marked the Spiders second tournament title in three events to begin the fall campaign. Richmond also won the season-opening Navy Fall Classic on September 9-10.
The Spiders placed three players among the top-10 finishers led by senior Joe Horowitz (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach), who captured individual medalist honors with a six-under-par score of 138 (70-68=138, -4). His six-under-par total marked a program 36-hole all-time record. In addition, his win marked Richmond's first individual tournament champion since Horowitz claimed last fall's James Madison University Invitational on October 23-24, 1999.
All told, Richmond's top four finishers delivered five even or sub-par rounds at the Liberty-JAE Classic. Sophomore Steve Lessing (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and freshman Geoff Reilert (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) tied for sixth place at one-over-par 145. Lessing put together rounds of 72 and 73, while Reilert, competing in his first collegiate event, fired an opening round 74 before shooting one-under-par 71 in round two. Senior Bryan Stark (Herndon, Va./Herndon) carded three-over-par 147 (72-75=147, +3) to finish in a three-way tie for 13th place. Junior Mark DiGiacomo (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) tied for 62nd place (78-79=157, +13).
Richmond returns to action on October 23 and 24 (Monday and Tuesday), taking part in the NCAA East Regional Fall Preview.
