LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Nebraksa women's soccer team posted a 4-0 decision over Richmond in the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championships at Abbott Sports Complex this afternoon.
With the loss, the Spiders watershed season, which saw the program compete in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the team's five-year history, ends with a program-best 13-7-0 mark. Richmond advanced to second round play following a 5-1 home triumph over West Virginia on Wednesday night.
"Today's match wasn't the result that we wanted, but I couldn't be more proud of our team," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "They battled all season long and in my mind, are true champions. Nebraska is a quick team and they just don't let you posses the ball for very long. They have a chance to go a long way in the tournament.
Seemingly a step quicker all day, Nebraska (22-1-0) controlled the tempo of the match throughout, outshooting Richmond, 30-12. In addition, Nebraska attempted 15 corner kicks to the Spiders' one. The Huskers got on the board at the 15:59 mark when sophomore forward Christine Latham broke loose in the penalty area and was tripped from behind. Husker junior halfback Meghan Anderson converted the ensuing penalty kick.
Nebraska added to its advantage at 57:11 when senior back Jenny Benson played a perfect ball to near the mouth of the goal that senior forward Lauren Tatum deposited. Richmond's best opportunity of the day came at 78:39 when freshman midfielder Molly Rettig (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) controlled a ball in the penalty area and fired a shot that ricocheted off of the near post.
Richmond's defense, anchored by senior back Jaclyn Raveia (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) and junior goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) played well throughout, but couldn't contain a powerful Nebraska offensive attack. The Huskers accounted for two goals in the contest's final 15 minutes. Freshman back Christy Harms made it 3-0, breaking behind the Spiders defense and blasting a shot just inside the far post (75:31). Nebraska completed the contest's scoring at 84:42 when Benson lofted in a shot from just outside the penalty area off of an assist from Danica Carey.
"They come at you from so many different angles and have scoring from 10 to 12 different players," noted Albright. "I thought that if we could control the center of the park that we would be right there at the end. When you are relentless like the Nebraska team that we saw today is, you are going to have plenty of scoring chances."
Samuhel played the entire 90 minutes, made seven saves and turned away several Husker opportunities with her solid play between the pipes. The Spiders played the majority of the second half without its two top scorers as sophomore midfielder Jenna Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal) battled injuries and were clearly not playing at 100 percent.
