Virginia Stops Richmond

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia scored on its first two possessions and took control early in a 34-6 win over Richmond in front of 50,285 fans at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville.
The Cavaliers took the opening kickoff and moved 78 yards in 13 plays, chewing 6:38 off the clock as Antwoine Womack scored from four yards out to give Virginia a 7-0 lead. Richmond fumbled on its first play from scrimmage and the Cavs recovered on Richmond's 26. Quarterback Dan Ellis took it in from the three and Virginia led 14-0.
The Cavaliers added a touchdown and two field goals in the second quarter to take a 27-0 advantage to the locker room at halftime. Ellis hit James Johnson with a 50-yard TD pass in the third quarter to give Virginia a 34-0 lead. Richmond's final two drives were its best of the game. The Spiders drove 67 yards in 14 plays to cap a 7:00 drive as quarterback Sean Gustus scored from three yards out. Richmond missed the two-point conversion and the Cavaliers led 34-6. The Spiders held the ball for 7:31 on their final drive, moving 70 yards in 16 plays.
Richmond reached the Virginia nine, but was stopped on downs to keep the final score at 34-6. Richmond won time of possession against Virginia 32:55-27:05. In the second half, the Spiders had the ball 21:37 to Virginia's 8:23. Richmond gained 228 yards on the ground on 53 carries. In the second half, the Spiders rushed 38 times for 180 yards (4.7 yards per carry). Fullback Claude Diggs rushed 17 times for 80 yards, including 73 yards on 15 carries in the second half.
