Proof Is In The Pudding For Spiders Over Dukes

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond's defense limited James Madison to two yards rushing and 111 yards of total offense as the Spiders defeated the Dukes 21-2 at UR Stadium. James Madison raised some eyebrows on its first possession. The Dukes had fourth-and-one on their own 32 and elected to go for it. Fullback B.J. Minor picked up six yards, but James Madison was called for holding and was forced to punt. Each team went three and out on its next possession.
Richmond started its second series on the 50 and used four running plays to move the ball to the 26. Quarterback Sean Gustus hit Ryan Tolhurst with a five-yard pass on second down, then found Tolhurst in the end zone on third down to put the Spiders ahead 7-0. The Dukes moved to the Richmond 10 on their next possession, but a penalty and a fumble kept James Madison off the scoreboard. Following a JMU fumble in the second quarter, Gustus connected with tailback J.R. Purnell on a 30-yard scoring toss to put the Spiders on top 14-0 with 4:48 left in the first half.
Neither team reached its opponent's territory through the rest of the half and Richmond took its 14-0 lead to the locker room at the break. The Spiders had their most impressive drive of the game in the third quarter. Richmond moved 71 yards in 14 plays in 8:13, with tailback TyRonne Turner reaching the end zone on a fourth-and-one.
The Spiders increased their lead to 21-0. On Richmond's next possession, the Spiders faced fourth down on their own 15. The snap from center went over punter Tom Mahony's head and through the end zone for a safety, making the score 21-2 with 13:48 left in the contest. James Madison reached Richmond territory only one more time, but lost the ball on a fumble and the Spiders held on for the 21-2 victory.
