BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) - Freshman quarterback Shawn Brady ran 77 yards for a touchdown on his first carry Saturday and Northeastern's defense took it from there for a 7-0 win over Richmond.
Richmond (1-5, 1-3 Atlantic 10) never got closer than the Northeastern 37-yard line as the Huskies (2-4, 2-3) almost completely shut down the Spiders passing game. Cordell Roane connected on just 4 of 17 passes for 29 yards.
The Huskies had just five first downs, but it didn't matter as the NU defense was dominant. The Spiders collected 13 first downs but had only 29 passing yards and 191 total yards of offense. Richmond had its best chance to score on its final drive, converting two fourth-down plays, but the Spiders failed on a fourth-and-five play with under a minute left to turn the ball over on downs.
Claude Diggs led the Spiders with 48 yards rushing.
