Three Richmond Student-Athletes Earn Atlantic 10 Honors

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Three Richmond student-athletes earned Atlantic 10 honors for their strong play this past week. Goalie Jennifer Alpert earned Field Hockey Freshman of the Week, while Jeremy Howard earned Player of the Week and Derek Schwandt earned Rookie of the Week in men's tennis.
Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootten) went 2-1 in three home games, as the Spiders defeated American 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 3, shutout VCU 3-0 on Oct. 6 and lost 4-0 to Ohio State on Oct. 6.
Alpert's second shutout of the season came against VCU on Friday before she tallied a career-high 11 saves against Ohio State on Sunday. In this week's three games, the goalie registered an 84.4 save percentage and a 1.66 goals against average. After 12 games this season, Alpert has registered 65 saves. She has compiled a 2.14 GAA and a 71.4 save percentage this fall.
The field hockey team returns to action this weekend with two Atlantic 10 contests. The Spiders host Temple at Noon on Saturday, October 13 and St. Joseph's at Noon on Sunday, October 14.
Howard (Dartmouth, Mass./Moses Brown School) was a perfect 4-0 in singles action over the weekend as he captured the Flight D singles championship at the East Coast Collegiates in Norfolk, Va. Along the way, he knocked off two players from both Virginia and James Madison, including Clint Morse (JMU) in the finals by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, Howard teamed with freshman Jeppy Moss (Fredericksburg, Va./Woodberry Forest School) to post a record of 2-1 as the tandem defeated Radford and Virginia. Howard has an overall record this fall of 7-2 (5-1 singles, 2-1 doubles).
Schwandt (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville), who earlier this season garnered both player and rookie of the week honors (Sept. 9), had a combined record of 6-1 at the tournament. In singles competition, Schwandt was 3-1 as he defeated two players from Virginia and one from George Mason, before falling to the eventual Flight B champion in the semifinals.
He combined with junior Dan Scrafford (Centreville, Va./Centreville) to win the Flight C doubles championship as the duo went 3-0, defeating Virginia twice and George Mason once. Thus far, Schwandt is 10-3 this fall (5-2 singles, 5-1 doubles).
The Richmond men's tennis team returns to action October 19-21 as the Spiders travel to Columbia, S.C. to participate in the South Carolina Fall Invitational.
