Spiders Fall To Hofstra, 35-21

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Rocky Butler threw for three touchdowns in the first half and ran for a fourth Saturday as Hofstra beat Richmond 35-21.
Hofstra (8-1, 7-1 Atlantic 10) won the battle of the quarterbacks, as Butler and Richmond's Cordell Roane each posted more than 400 yards total offense. Butler's first TD pass was a 73-yard bomb to Marques Colston, followed by a 5-yard pass to Tom Kemper with a minute left in the first quarter to bring the Pride lead to 14-0.
Richmond (2-6, 2-4) came back in the second quarter with a pair of TD runs by Roane for 1 and 62 yards. With less than a minute left in the half, Boyd Ouden scored on a 19-yard pass from Roane to tie the score at 21-21.
Hofstra held Richmond scoreless in the second half, taking advantage of a Roane fumble on Richmond's 9-yard line early in the fourth. Doug Shanahan took it in for the TD.
Butler threw 16-for-31 for 350 yards and rushed for 50, contributing all but 49 yards of the Pride's 449 offensive yards. Butler had the final score of the game on a 19-yard run with 8:07 left in the fourth.
NOTES:
Junior quarterback Cordell Roane etched his name in the Richmond record book with an outstanding performance. He tied for second all-time with 402 total yards and now ranks second all-time after rushing for 246 yards. He is tied for sixth all-time with 37 carries. His 246 rushing yards is the most ever by a Richmond quarterback.
Redshirt freshman Clement Johnson made his first career interception.
Junior linebacker Mark Thompson made six tackles for loss.
