Spiders Finish Eighth At The Emerald Coast Collegiate

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of Richmond men's golf team began its spring campaign, placing eighth of 17 teams at the three-day Emerald Coast Collegiate. Contested at the par-72, 7,072-yard Sportsman of Perdido Golf Resort, the Spiders fired a 84-over-par score of 948. The University of West Florida claimed the event, shooting 33-over-par 897.
Individually for the Spiders, junior Ryan McLain (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) led the way, closing with rounds of 78 and 75 after opening with 81 for an 18-over-par total of 234 to finish in a tie for 32nd place. Senior Bryan Stark (Herndon, Va./Herndon) followed with a 22-over par total of 238 (81-80-77=238, +22), while sophomore Steve Lessing (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) carded a 23-over par score of 239 (82-82-75=239, +23). Stark completed play in a tie for 38th place and Lessing tied for 43rd. Junior Mark DiGiacomo (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) tied for 52nd at 26-over-par 242 (84-77-81=242, +24) and senior Joe Horowitz (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) was 61st, turning in a score of 29-over-par 245 (81-85-79-245, +29).
UNC Wilmington's Derek Brown claimed tournament individual medalist honors, firing three-over-par 219. He was the only player in the field to break 74 all three days, posting a trio of 73's.
Richmond resumes tournament action on Monday and Tuesday, March 5-6, participating in the Matlock Collegiate Classic at Imperial Lakes Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla.
