RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond senior back Jaclyn Raveia (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) was drafted in the second round (14th pick) of Sunday's Women's United Soccer Association's (WUSA's) college draft by the Carolina Courage. She is the first Richmond women's soccer player to ever be drafted professionally.
It has been a remarkable year for Raveia, who was honored as a 2000 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first-team All-American and was selected as the 2000 NSCAA/adidas Women's Collegiate Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Raveia, the 1999 and 2000 CAA Defender of the Year, became just the fifth player in conference women's soccer history to garner first-team all-conference honors for four consecutive years. A two-year team captain and four-year starter, Raveia was also a four-time first-team Mid-Atlantic Region All-American and was tabbed first-team all-state by the Virginia Sports Information Directors all four seasons as well. She was also selected to the Soccer Buzz online magazine third-team All-American. In addition to assuming playmaking duties during her senior season, she marshaled a Richmond defense that posted five shutout wins and outscored opponents 36-9 in its 13 victories on the campaign. She started all 83 matches of her Richmond career and contributed four goals, ten assists and 18 points.
Over the weekend, Raveia participated in the sixth annual 2001 Umbro Select All-Star Classic, which featured the nation's premier graduating senior collegiate soccer players in addition to top national and international pro players. Representatives from the professional leagues as well as the U.S. National Team attended the Umbro Select.
WUSA play begins on April 21, 2001. Carolina Courage, based in Raleigh, N.C., will play its home games at Fetzer Field at UNC Chapel Hill.
