AWARDS ABOUND: In addition to garnering first team all-CAA recognition, Spider senior forward Greg Stevenson was a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)-Chevrolet Division I District 4 First Team selection. Spider head coach John Beilein was honored as the NABC's Division I District 4 Coach of the Year.
Among conference award winners, junior center Tim Faulconer was named to the CAA's all-defensive team, while senior center Scott Kauffman earned all-academic team recognition.
In women's basketball, Spider junior point guard Michele Koclanes earned first-team all-CAA honors and was voted to the conference's all-academic team.
MIKE DAVIS AWARD: In recognition of his service to the University of Richmond community, to Spider athletics and the football program, Spider senior linebacker Mac Janney was the recipient of the Fifth Annual Mike Davis "Man In The Middle Award." The award is presented to the special achiever who exemplified the characteristics of former Spider football player Mike Davis such as determination, dedication and leadership in their educational and extracurricular activities. Past recipients have included Renee Lewis, Mike Farland, Marc Megna and Matt Davis.
SIX SPIDERS INDUCTED INTO THE UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME: Former University of Richmond Director of Athletics Chuck Boone as well as former Spiders Leigh Cowlishaw, John Davis, Betty Gustafson, Jim McKeon and the late Glenn Thistlethwaite were inducted into the University of Richmond Athletic Hall of Fame on January 20. They were later recognized at halftime of the Richmond-William & Mary men's basketball game.
SPIDERS IN THE PROS: Baseball spring training is underway and several former Richmond players dot minor league rosters including Mark Budzinski (Cleveland Indians), Casey Burns (San Diego Padres), John Dorman (New York Mets), Mike Dwyer (Boston Red Sox), Nic Jackson (Chicago Cubs), Jeff Kenney (Milwaukee Brewers), Justin Lamber (Kansas City Royals), G.R. Schalick (Baltimore Orioles) and Mike Smith (Toronto Blue Jays). Former Spiders Josh Lamberg, Nate Rewers and Bobby St. Pierre are playing in independent leagues. In addition, Sean Casey and Brian Jordan are playing in the majors for the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves, respectively.
ZIADIE AND RAVEIA DRAFTED PROFESIONALLY: University of Richmond men's soccer player Craig Ziadie was selected by D.C. United in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft, while women's soccer player Jaclyn Raveia was chosen by the Carolina Courage of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA). They are the first players ever to be drafted professionally from their respective programs.
Ziadie was tabbed the 2000 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, becoming the first Spider to take home the recognition since 1990. He was also selected First Team All-South Atlantic Region and First Team All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors. In addition to be tabbed the conference player of the year in 2000, Ziadie was also a First Team All-CAA selection in 1998 and 1999.
Raveia was honored as a 2000 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first-team All-American and was selected as the 2000 NSCAA/adidas Women's Collegiate Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The 1999 and 2000 CAA Defender of the Year, Raveia became just the fifth player in conference women's soccer history to garner first-team all-conference honors for four consecutive years.
RICHMOND'S MEN AND WOMEN'S BASKETALL PROGRAMS RECEIVE NATIONAL PUBLICITY: Richmond's men's basketball program was highlighted in a three column USA Today article on Tuesday, January 30, entitled "Facing a must-win situation." In the Sunday, February 4, edition of The New York Times, Spider women's basketball point guard Michele Koclanes, a native of Pelham, N.Y., was featured in an article entitled "The Little Point Guard Who Could Sparkles."
ROBINS CENTER FACELIFT: During the offseason, the Robins Center underwent renovations. The most noticeable improvements are the red and blue banners that grace the rafters and highlight the men and women's basketball CAA regular season and tournament titles as well as NCAA, NIT and NWIT tournament appearances. In addition, a mural surrounds the top of the Robins Center, highlighting the spirit of Spider athletics.
