Several Good Showings at VCU Invitational for the Spiders

RICHMOND, Va. - The outdoor season resumed for the Richmond Spiders on a windy Saturday as they competed with seven other colleges and universities in the VCU Invitational at Sports Backers Stadium.
The Spiders best showing of the afternoon came in the women's 5,000 meter run and the 200 meter run as they took 1-2-3 in both events. Sophomore Sarah Taylor (Orono, Maine) crossed first in the women's 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:52.13. Freshmen Ali Belicose (Red Bank, N.J.) and Emily Walton (Chicago, Ill.) took second and third, respectively. In the 200-meter run it was a sophmore sweep as Richmond took the top three places. Bridget Keenan (Newport News, Va.) took first with a time of 2:22.56 while fellow second year teammates Erin Brandt (Fanwood, N.J.) and Michelle Macdonald (Fairfax, Va.)finished in the next two spots. Senior Tamika Williams Southampton, Bermuda) placed second in the women's 200 meter run (27.07).
Freshman Julee Wilson (Chester Springs, Pa.) claimed the Spiders' sole victory in the field events by winning the long jump in 17-4.25, more than a foot clear of her nearest competitor. Classmate Cortney Henschke (Rye, N.H.) cleared 5-2 to place fourth in the high jump. Richmond earned two second place finishes in the field events. Sophomore Rachel Shrewsbury (Dearborn, Mich.) took home second place honors with a throw of 43 feet, 5.5 inches. The mark improved her old standard of 42-11.75 she set as a freshman. In the women's javelin throw Sarah Mergenthaler (Colts Neck, N.J.), the 2000 CAA javelin thrower, placed second (135-6)eclipsing the mark of 132-2 set in 1992 by Ina Nicosia.
On the men's side, Freshman Jeff Wilburn, the indoor school record holder, posted a fourth place finish while in the javelin throw Josh Fralick (Sarasota, Fla) notched a third place throw (46.56 m) while Chris Martin (Austin, Texas) was sixth.
In the 4X400 relay, the Richmond women claimed first (4:11.55) while the men registered a second place showing (3:29.26).
The men's 1,600 relay of Davis, juniors Mike Finn (Corona del Mar, Calif.), Dave Blanchard (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Matt Beck (Kennett Square, Pa) finished second in 3:29.26.
Richmond will return home for the annual Spider Relays March 30 and 31. The meet will attract teams from as far as Detroit and Santa Barbara, Calif.
