Richmond Shines in 2001 Spider Relays

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. --The annual Spider Relays concluded on Saturday afternoon at the UR Track Complex with the host school taking several first place showings. Richmond captured five first-place finishes in individual events and also claimed first in the women's 4 X 400 relay event.
Sophomore Rachel Shrewsbury (Dearborn, Mich.) set a new school record in the shot put placing first with a throw of 45' 11/2". Freshman Julee Wilson (Chester Springs, Pa.) captured first place in the women's long jump with a leap of 18' 31/4", also a new program mark. Wilson's jump broke the old mark of 18'0.5" set by Aimee Tait in 1992. In other field events, sophomore Cathleen Campbell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) finished second in the women's high jump (5'4)and topped her own school record. Richmond senior Sarah Merganthaler (Colts Neck, N.J.) and freshman Diane Schreiber (Johnsonberg, Pa.) brought home third and fourth place finishes in the javelin throw.
Senior Julee Wilson recorded third place honors and her second school record of the afternoon in the 100 meter run clocking in at 12.4. The Spiders' win in the 4X400 women's relay in a time of 3:55.37 established a new program mark. The team was comprised of Andrea Tomforde, Mari Jusseaume, Tamika Williams and Julee Wilson . The Richmond women finished second in the women's distance medley relay with a time of 12:15.98.
On the men's side, freshman Pete Jennings (Fort Washington, Pa.) took fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the men's 1500 meter run. The men's distance medley relay team garnered a second place finish with a time of 10:10.01, the best time posted for a Richmond DNR team in 16 years.
In the field events, sophomore Justin McElfish (Woodbridge, Va.) claimed top honors in the shot put with a throw of 48' 7" and placed second in the men's discus (143'9"). School record holder Jeff Wilburn (Hingham, Mass.) took third in the high jump (6'2").
