Richmond Golf Places 11th At The Matlock Invitational

LAKELAND, Fla. - The University of Richmond men's golf team fired a three-round total of 94-over-par total of 958 (318-322-318=958) to place 11th of 18 teams at the three-round Matlock Invitational. Contested at the 7,065 Grasslands Golf and Country Club, strong winds and gusts ballooned scores throughout the event as tournament host Florida Southern won the championship, shooting 39-over-par 903 (300-300-303=903). In addition, Mocassin Steve Sokol claimed tournament medalist honors, carding a three-over total of 219.
Individually for the Spiders, senior co-captain Joe Horowitz (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) led the way, following an opening round four-over-par 76 with rounds of 79 and 82 to finish in a tie for 30th place at 21-over-par 237. Junior Mark DiGiacomo (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) closed action in a nine-way tie for 40th place with a 23-over-par score of 239 (78-82-79=239, +23). Senior Bryan Stark (Herndon, Va./Herndon) posted 24-over-par 240 (82-82-76=240, +24) to place in a tie for 49th place, while junior Ryan McLain (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) turned in a score of 27-over-par 243 (82-80-81=243, +27). Sophomore Steve Lessing (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) tied for 68th (83-81-83=247, +31).
Richmond resumes tournament action on Friday-Sunday, March 23-25, taking part in the Furman Intercollegiate at Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C.
