UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's golf team completed its fall schedule with a fifth-place finish (291-296-587) at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational from Oct. 27-28. Four Spiders finished in the top-20 at the par-72, 6,572-yard Landsdowne Resort Golf Course in Leesburg, Va.
Sophomore Steven Sherck (Statesville, N.C.) led the Spiders and tied for 14th after carding a two-round 146 (73-73). The top-15 placement was the best of his career and his matching 73s marked a season-low.
Three Richmond golfers tied for 17th after posting a 147 at the event. Junior Sam Sikes (Huntsville, Ala.) fired a first-round 71 - the Spiders' only sub-par round of the event - and followed that with a second-round 76.
The Spiders' best golfer during the fall season, junior Steve Lessing carded a 75-72-147 to earn his second consecutive top-20 finish. The Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. native averaged a team-best 73.6 in 13 rounds during the fall slate.
Freshman Tyler Randol earned his best career finish after shooting a 72-75 in Leesburg. Sophomore Parker Hughes (Anniston, Ala.) also competed for the Spiders, finishing tied for 49th after shooting a 75-80-155.
Penn State won the team title after carding a 284-276-560, 10 shots better than second-place East Carolina (288-282-570). The Pirates' Jason Harris captured the individual medal with a 68-67-135.
Richmond garnered two top-5 finishes in the five-event fall schedule. They return to action at the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla. from Feb. 17-18, 2003.
