UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond earned its second women's soccer NCAA appearance in the past three years, as announced today by the Divison I Women's Soccer Committee. A field of 64 teams will compete for the 21st NCAA crown.
The Spiders (13-5-2), automatic qualifiers from the Atlantic 10, will take on ACC Tournament runner-up Clemson (14-7-0) on Friday in Charlotte, N.C. The meeting is the fifth between the two teams. The Tigers hold a 3-1 edge in the series.
"Clemson is a very good team. We have played them in the past and I feel we match-up pretty well with them," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "We were extremely focused for the A-10 Tournament however getting focused on Friday will be another challenge for this team. This game is played on emotion."
Richmond captured the Atlantic 10 championship title on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island. The Tigers fell to North Carolina, 6-0, on Sunday in the ACC Tournament finals.
The Spiders tied a program-best for wins with their 13th victory this past weekend. The seven-year old program first made an NCAA appearance in 2000, posting a 5-1 first round victory over West Virginia before falling to Nebraska (0-4).
"This team has great desire and leadership. This is our No. 1 priority right now," fifth-year senior and co-captain Meredith Johnson notes. "Only 50 percent of this game is talent, the rest is passion and adrenalin. We knew we could make it this far."
