Richmond Wins Virginia All-Sport Survey

NORFOLK, Va. -- The University of Richmond won .627 of its intercollegiate athletic contests in 2001-02 to win the 24th annual Virginia Sports Information Director's Association Division I All Sport survey.
The Spiders won .677 percent of their men's contests and .561 of their women's. Richmond won three Atlantic 10 titles, including men's and women's tennis and women's swimming. The men's basketball team reached the NIT quarterfinals, while the baseball squad reached the NCAA's Super Regional, losing to Nebraska in the final game of a best of three series.
Hampton University was second overall at .616, while the University of Virginia was third at .603. Hampton led all Division I schools in men's percentage at .727, while Old Dominion topped the women's contests at .656.
National championships were won by Old Dominion in women's sailing. Virginia led the State in top 10 team finishes. William & Mary football reached the I-AA playoffs, while Virginia Tech played in the Gator Bowl.
Liberty again led the State with eight conference championships. William & Mary followed with six.
Overall, Virginia Division I school compiled a 2,038-1,835-38 record for a winning percentage of .526. Men's teams were 978-941-16 (.510) and women's teams finished at 1,060-894-22 (.542). The survey began in 1978-79 and includes winning percentages of only those sports with NCAA sponsored championships. This was the first title for the University of Richmond. Hampton won the last two years.
