Richmond's Erin Clapp Sets New Pole Vault Record

CHAPEL HILL N.C. and NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The University of Richmond's track and field teams competed in two meets this weekend. At the CNU College Indoor Classic, freshman Erin Clapp (Guilderland, N.Y.) sailed to a 10'0" height to break the previous record of 8'11.75".
Competing within the state lines at the Christopher Newport University College Indoor Classic, Clapp and her teammates fared well in the two-day event. Sophomore Jennifer Coles (Gretna, Va.) placed well in the 200-meter sprinting 27.92 for ninth. On the men's side, sophomore David Freeman (Fayetteville, N.C.) earned a tenth placing in the 200-meter (23.53).
The Spider women continued a strong showing. Senior Sarah Stuber (Prosper, Texas) bolted to a 1:00.47 seventh place finish in the 400-meter dash. Teammates senior Michelle Macdonell (Fairfax, Va.), junior Amy Hahn (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and freshman Amy Thesing (Columbia, S.C.) tallied three top-ten spots in the 800-meter with sixth (2:26.93), eighth (2:27.82), and ninth (2:28.13), respectively. In the 1500-meter, the Spiders picked up speed with senior Lauren Manero (Wilton, Conn.) finishing second (4:55.85) and freshman Diana Morse (Harvard, Mass.) following in third (4:56.84). Junior Alison Belicose (Red Bank, N.J.) continued to pace the Spiders with a second (18:39.78) 5000-meter finish. The women's relay teams picked up sixth in the 4x400 and first in the 4x800.
The men's distance runners also made their presence known. Junior Paul Miguel (Hopewell, N.J.) earned an 18th place 2:04.27 800-meter finish. Senior Peter Jennings (Fort Washington, Pa.), junior Tim Caramore (East Greenbush, N.Y.), and freshman John Ciccarelli (South Bury, Conn.) grabbed the fourth (4:01.59), seventh (4:05.24), and 12th (4:11.63) spots, respectively. Junior Seann Mulchay (Wynantskill, N.Y.) finished out the distance performances with a sixth 3000-meter run in 8:48.71.
In the field events, Kaitlyn Ryan (Garden City, N.Y.) continued her strong freshman year with second in the high jump (5"04'), while sophomore Kari Butt (Brookfield, Conn.) threw for 43"05.25' in the weight throw. Clapp broke Cortney Henschke (Rye, N.H.) and Cathy McLane's (New Paltz, N.Y.) tied record set during the 2002 and 2003 seasons with a vault of 10'0".
At the Tar Heel Classic, hosted by the University of North Carolina, the Spiders distance runners earned numerous top-ten placings. Senior Ruth Chege (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ran a 5:04.70 mile to finish eighth. Classmate Bridget Keenan (Newport News, Va.) followed to grab the tenth spot with a 5:15.78 run. In the 800-meter run, freshman Danielle Eaton (Malvern, Pa.) and senior Erin Brandt (Fanwood, N.J.) earned seventh (2:23.56) and 11th (2:25.51) finishes. Junior Lyndsey Webber (Sayville, N.J.) also took 11th in the 3000-meter run with 10:25.46. Seniors Anne Rettig (Charlottesville, Va.) and Sarah Taylor (Orono, Maine) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 5000-meter.
Sophomore Ashley Bell (Glen Allen, Va.) registered in the 60-meter hurdles (9.06) and triple jump (37"03.25'). Junior jumper, Julee Wilson (Chester Springs, Pa.) recorded a leap of 17"06" in the long jump and ran 26.97 in the 200-meter dash. Classmate Diane Schreiber (Johnsonburg, Pa.) threw 38"10.25' for ninth (shot put) and 46"04.25' for tenth (weight throw). Joining Schreiber, senior Rachel Shrewsbury (Dearborn, Mich.) tossed 42"09' for sixth in the shot put.
Richmond track and field returns to action next weekend, January 31 and February 1 at the Penn State National Invitational.
