LEESBURG, Va. - Richmond sophomore Tyler Randol captured the Spiders' first individual medal since the Spring of 2001 when he tied for first at the Hoya Invitational after carding a first-round 69 on Sunday. Randol and the Spiders earned their first tournament title, the 13th in program history, since that same event - the Golden Horseshoe Invitational (Joe Horowitz - individual medal).
Richmond remained tied with Penn State atop the leaderboard after carding a 288 because today's final round was rained out at the par-72 Lansdowne Resort Golf Course.
"It was unfortunate to be rained out today because our guys were really excited to play in the last group with Penn State and Georgetown," head coach Kevin Lynch said. "This definitely gives us momentum and puts us in decent shape to qualify for the [NCAA] Regional. We are starting to develop some depth. I can honestly say we are playing much, much better heading into the winter than when we started the fall."
Junior Steven Sherck followed Randol's three-under-par 69 with a one-under 71 to tie for fifth, his first career top-5 finish. Freshman John Pelet carded a first-round 72 and tied for ninth, his fourth top-10 in his inaugural fall season.
Seniors Steve Lessing (76) and Kyle Hess (79) also competed for third-year head coach Kevin Lynch who earned his first tournament victory as a collegiate head coach.
The Hoya Invitational completed the fall season for Richmond. The Spiders had four different players finish in the top 5 during the fall campaign. Pelet led Richmond with a 71.6 scoring average in 14 rounds, while Randol was second with a 73.0 average.
