Coach Reid talks about the Spiders' 2003 recruiting class
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond head coach Jim Reid and his staff announced today that 14 student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Spider football program for the 2003-04 academic year.
Of the 14 signees, six hail from Virginia and two are from Richmond-area high schools. Pennsylvania and Texas supplied two recruits for the second consecutive year, while Maryland also produced two. Washington, D.C. and West Virginia are represented as well.
Six student-athletes are listed on both sides of the ball, five on offense and three on defense. Eight earned All-State honors and four led their respective teams to a State Championship.
"This class will mesh very well with guys we already have," Reid said. "They will enhance our image on campus and with alumni. I am really excited to see these student-athletes develop their already great character and athletic ability."
Former Spider standout and current Highland Springs' head coach, Scott Burton, sends defensive back Stephen Howell to his alma mater, the first Springer to sign with Richmond during Reid's eight-year tenure. Another local high school, John F. Kennedy, sends its first recruit to Richmond under Coach Reid in defensive back/wide receiver Jeremiah Hargrove.
The first West Virginia recruit to sign with Coach Reid at Richmond is linebacker Mark Beilein, son of former Spider basketball coach John Beilein. Former Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowler Cliff Harris' son Andrew Harris is another defensive back in the 2003 class.
Former high school teammates that will reunite on next year's Spider roster are Kempsville's Sherman Logan and Ben Teufel (rising sophomore), and Hereford (Md.) High's Adam Goloboski and Eddie Darney (redshirt freshman).
