Track & Field Competes At Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Spider Ruth Chege continued her outstanding senior year when she broke the Richmond program record in the 10,000 meters at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. Chege and her track & field teammates competed against elite collegiate and independent competition in one of the biggest meets on the east coast this season.
On Friday night, Chege placed ninth in the 10,000 meters when she crossed the finish line in 35:33.27, more than 26 seconds faster than Deborah Snaggs previous record-setting time she clocked in 1979.
Junior Kevin Rhue sparked the men's squad with his eighth-place finish in the 1,500 meters where he posted a time of 3:55.08. He was also part of the 4x1500 meter relay team that finished 11th with a time of 16:14.88.
Three Spiders finished in the top 15 in the second heat of the 5,000 meters. Sarah Taylor placed ninth with a time of 18:25.10 and was followed by Anne Rettig (18:30.64/12th) and Alison Belicose (18:35.09/15th).
Other highlights on the track included Bridget Keenan's seventh-place finish in the unseeded 1,500 meter race (4:42.66) and Katie Sloan's 10th-place finish in the second heat of the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
In the field events, junior Diane Schreiber placed 17th in the shot put (43'3.75"), two places in front of senior Rachel Shrewsbury who heaved the shot 42'11.50".
Spider assistant coach, Angela Bertholdt, placed third in the event, hurling the shot 50'8.25".
Richmond returns to action at the Duke Relays on April 4-5.
