UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - On Thursday night April 17, the University of Richmond Athletic Department held its annual Student-Athlete End-of-the-Year Celebration in the Tyler Haynes Commons. The dessert social and awards presentation highlighted the entire athletic department for its prolific accomplishments during this season, but also focused on every Spider senior.
Men's basketball senior Jeff Myers opened the evening with a congratulatory speech for every team that has contributed to Richmond's 11.5-point lead in the A-10 Commissioner's Cup. He was followed by women's soccer senior Meredith Johnson who reminded everyone that it is the "moments" that we cherish in life. She gave a touching tribute to what it means to be a student-athlete at the University of Richmond.
The award presentation began by honoring the female and male senior student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade point average. Cross Country's Bridget Keenan has posted a 3.81 GPA with a psychology major during her Richmond career. Leading the men was baseball's Joe Larkin who carries a 3.63 GPA while majoring in political science.
Spider Club president Ray Tate and Spider Club board member Martha Beddingfield honored three seniors as the Spider Club Student-Athletes of the Year. Track & Field's Ruth Chege, field hockey's Jill Murphy and baseball's Vito Chiaravalloti were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments.
As the master of ceremonies, Bob Black, told everyone during the presentation this was a bittersweet evening. Many individual, team and athletic department highlights were celebrated, but it was also the beginning of our final salute to those senior student-athletes who have given so much and who are revered by so many.
