The second Spider in as many days signed a professional football contract when fullback Claude Diggs joined the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday. Diggs' teammate Justin McElfish signed a Free Agent contract with the Washington Redskins on Monday.
The 6-1, 240-pound fullback impressed many pro scouts with his combination of size and speed. In four years at Richmond, Diggs gained 891 yards on 224 carries (4.0 average). He played in 42 games and scored three touchdowns. As a sophomore, Diggs carried 82 times and was never brought down for a loss.
The Virginia Beach, Va. native, enjoyed a career game when he rushed for 90 yards on 17 attempts at Arkansas State on Sept. 30, 2000. Diggs scored twice (21 and nine yards) in the Spiders' 30-27 comeback win against the Division I-A program.
Diggs joins former Spider Paris Lenon as a member of the Packers. Lenon led the Pack with 22 special teams tackles in 2002 and also made four stops from his reserve linebacker spot.
