Spiders Finish Second In Virginia All-Sports Survey

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond won .631 percent of its contests during the 2002-03 year and finished second overall in the 25th annual Virginia Sports Information Director's Association Division I All-Sport Survey.
Last year's All-Sports survey champion, Richmond captured the women's standings after posting a .641 winning percentage (81-45-2). The Spider men finished third in their rankings with a .623 (92-55-3) winning percentage.
The 2002-03 season saw Richmond earn its first Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Cup, given to the school with the most overall success in league competition. The Spiders won five conference titles - field hockey, women's soccer, swimming & diving, women's indoor track & field and baseball - and advanced to the post-season in seven sports. Ange Bradley (field hockey), Matt Kredich (swimming), Lori Taylor (women's indoor) and LaRee Sugg (women's golf) earned A-10 Coach of the Year honors.
The baseball and women's soccer programs finished their respective seasons with a national ranking. Head Coach Peter Albright's women's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet Sixteen and garnered a No. 16 national ranking. Head Coach Ron Atkins baseball team advanced to the Stanford Regional's championship game before concluding their season with a 48-15 record and a No. 21 ranking.
Field Hockey (first-ever trip to the NCAA), men's soccer (NCAA), men's and women's basketball (NIT) and women's outdoor track & field (Ruth Chege in the NCAA 1,500 meter) also advanced to the post-season. These accolades earned a program-record 164 points in the Director's Cup, a competition among all Division I schools marking overall program excellence.
VCU won the 2003 All-Sport Survey after winning .673 percent of its athletic competitions.
