Sherck's Three-Under Round Leads Spiders To 11th

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Senior Steven Sherck carded the second-best round of the day with a three-under-par 69 and finished tied for 18th at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate, played at the Mid Pines Inn and Golf Course. Sherck's play led the Spiders (302-299-294--895) to the fifth-best score in the final round and moved them into 11th place.
Sherck improved in every round, firing a 219 (78-72-69) in the season-opening event. He finished eight strokes behind individual medalist Nathan Stamey of UNC Greensboro who shot a 70-71-70--211.
Freshman Billy Hanes tied for 33rd in his first collegiate event after shooting a 222 (73-73-76). Classmate Jordan Utley tied for 59th with a 229 (75-75-79).
Rounding out the Richmond field was Sam Sikes (76-79-76--231/T-66) and John Pelet (82-81-73--236/T-76).
Wichita State was the only team to finish below par and won the tournament with an 11-under-par 853 (287-280-286).
The Spiders return to action at the Windom Memorial Classic from October 4-5.
