UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Former University of Richmond women's soccer player Edda Gardarsdottir scored her first-ever international goal on Saturday evening in Iceland's 4-3 loss to the United States at Frontier Field in Rochester, N.Y. The opening game of the "Fan Celebration Tour" attracted 14,870 people, the largest ever to watch a soccer game at Frontier Field.
The United States took a 3-0 lead early in the second half before Iceland tied the match with a trio of goals. Gardarsdottir's goal in the 68th minute brought Iceland within one, setting the score at 3-2, but the United States earned the win with a goal in stoppage time. The three goals marked the first time in six meetings that Iceland had scored against the United States.
Gardarsdottir, a four-year letterwinner for the Spiders, was honored to the NSCAA/adidas All-America third team in 2002 and the Mid-Atlantic region second team in 2003. While starting 72 contests at Richmond, she was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 first team selection.
Iceland faces the United States again on Wednesday, September 25 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
