UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond track and field team will be part of a 25-team field Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Maryland Indoor Invitational in Landover, Md. The event, held at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex, is set to begin with field events around 10:30 a.m., while running events are scheduled for 1 p.m.
A number of men's team members have improved their individual marks over the last two meets. Freshman Adedayo Oladejo turned in a season-best time of 7.42 in the 60 meters last weekend. Freshman Doug Rubin improved on his season-opening 400 meter time last weekend when he recorded a finish of 52.41. Senior Brett Walton's long jump distance improved by more than a foot last week when he went 21-01.25. Sophomore Rusty Burrell also recorded a season-best in the 400 last week with a time of 52.79. All four will be in action this weekend in a variety of events.
Junior John Ciccarelli will be making his 2004-05 Track and Field debut Saturday. The Southbury, Conn., native, who is scheduled to compete in the Mile and run the Mile portion of the Distance Medley Relay, is coming off a very successful cross country season in 2004. He became the first Richmond runner to ever win an individual Atlantic 10 Conference Championship, running the 8K in a time of 25:30.0. He then finished 15th at the NCAA Southeast Regional to earn All-Region honors and later capped the season off by being named the Richmond men's cross country MVP.
The Richmond women's squad will be led by senior Ashley Bell, who is coming off a great weekend at Virginia Tech. The Glen Allen, Va., native recorded a time of 7.90 in the 60 meters in Blacksburg, Va. Bell is the current 60 meter record holder at Richmond and is scheduled to appear in the 60 meter, 60 meter hurdles and the 200 meters Saturday.
Junior Danielle Eaton and sophomore Leslie Gleue, will look to keep their improvement string going. Eaton, a Malvern, Pa., native bettered her 800 meters time last weekend and is scheduled to run the 800 portion of Richmond's Distance Medley Relay in Maryland.
Gleue, a native of Cape Canaveral, Fla., recorded a distance of 43-00.25 in last weekend's weight throw to place 15th. She is scheduled to take part in the weight throw again Saturday as well as the shot.
