PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Richmond men's golf team is in first place after the first round of the Big 5 Invitational played Saturday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
The Spiders scored an 8-over par 292 under very windy conditions to finish the day with a one-stroke lead over Penn State, the team that Richmond coach Adam Decker played for and was an assistant coach last season. Columbia is in third place, four strokes behind the Spiders at 12-over 296.
"The guys played well, considering the windy conditions," Decker said. "There are eight teams that are within eight shots of the lead. It's a close race and we're looking to finish strong and distance ourselves from the field."
Senior Tyler Randol (Lawrence, N.Y.) is tied for second after shooting a 1-under par 70.
"Tyler was steady all day," Decker said. "He was patient and capitalized on his birdie opportunities."
Sophomore Jordan Utley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for fifth at 1-over par 72. Sophomore Billy Hanes (Elma, N.Y.), who is playing in his first event of the season for the Spiders, shot a 2-over 73 to finish the day tied for eighth.
Freshman David Feeley (Phoenix, Md.) carded a 6-over par 77 and is tied for 34th, while fellow frosh Tim Courtney is at 7-over and tied for 45th.
Richmond will tee off Sunday at 12:30, paired with Penn State and Columbia.
