GREENVILLE, N.C. - Sophomore Natasha Lopez Moreira (Asuncion, Paraguay) posted her sixth collegiate top-10 finish, tying for seventh as the University of Richmond women's golf team took seventh at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate held at Bradford Creek Country Club.
The Spiders finished the three-day, three-round tournament at 36-over par in sole possession of seventh place out of 21 teams. Richmond was just two strokes out of fifth place and three shots out of fourth.
"We had a good finish in a fairly strong and large field," Richmond head coach Leighann Rastede said. "I feel like we could have finished a little bit stronger, but this was a good learning experience playing a very long golf course."
The par-72, 6,232-yard Bradford Creek course proved challenging, especially under wet conditions on Saturday and Sunday. The Spiders were just 8-over (296) after the first round Friday, before going 11-over (299) and 17-over (305) in the final two rounds.
Moreira shot a 1-over 73 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 2-over (74-71-73=218). She birdied both par 5s on the front nine Sunday and the eagled the par-5, 480-yard 10th hole.
Sophomore Ally Caffrey (Rumford, R.I.) registered her second top 15 finish of the fall by taking 11th. Caffrey shot a 3-over 75 Sunday after rounds of 72 and 73 to finish at 4-over par 220.
Freshman Rosario Germino (Necohea, Argentina) also shot a 75 Sunday to finish at 10-over par 226 (77-74-75) and in a tie for 30th.
Natasha, Ally and Rosario were strong during the entire tournament," Rastede said.
Junior Ashley Lambert (Bradenton, Fla.) finished in a tie for 78th with a 237, including an opening round 73. Senior Lauren Ritter (Watchung, N.J.) tied for 97th with a 245.
"I am happy for the most part," Rastede said. "Our Golfstat ranking was 95th before this tournament and I think our finish will move us up even higher."
The Spiders have two more tournaments this fall. Richmond will play in the Ross Resorts Invitational at Southern Pines, N.C. on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The Spiders will conclude the fall season at the Lady Jaguar Invitational in Augusta, Ga., Nov. 6-8.
