RUTHER GLEN, Va. - The University of Richmond men's golf team finished 11th out of 15 teams at the Mattaponi Springs Collegiate Shootout, which was hosted by Virginia Commonwealth on Monday and Tuesday.
Going against nine teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year, the Spiders finished 19-over par for the 54-hole tournament. Richmond finished just one stroke behind 10th-place Virginia Tech and three strokes back from ninth-place Maryland. The Spiders shot 9-over 297 in the opening round, 1-under 287 in the second round and 11-over 299 in Tuesday's final round.
Freshman Tim Courtney (Midlothian, Va.) was tied for seventh heading into Tuesday after firing a pair of 2-under 70s on Monday. Courtney bogeyed three holes and double-bogeyed another on the front nine Tuesday, but regrouped to shoot 1-over on the back nine to finish the day at 5-over 77. That left him at 1-over par for the tournament, which put him in a tie for 25th with teammate Jordan Utley (Richmond, Va.). Utley birdied three holes on his way to shooting a 1-under 71 on Tuesday, after carding two rounds of 1-over 73 on Monday.
Junior John Pelet (Atglen, Pa.) shot a 1-over par 73 Tuesday to finish the tournament at 2-over 223 in a tie for 46th. He shot an even-par 72 in the second round after a 78 in the morning round Monday. Freshman David Feeley (Phoenix, Md.) finished three strokes behind Pelet at 10-over 226 (76-72-78) and senior Tyler Randol (Lawrence, N.Y.) shot a 238 (78-74-86).
Wake Forest won the tournament, followed by a tie for second with Kent State and Tulsa. Atlantic 10 foe Xavier finished fourth, while Missouri and North Carolina tied for fifth. Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers was the medalist finishing at 14-under (67-66-69) on the par 72, 6,911-yard course.
Richmond returns to action this weekend when they travel to New Haven, Conn. for the Macdonald Cup hosted by Yale University. The tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at The Course at Yale, home of the 2004 NCAA East Regional.
