Two Spiders Qualify For NCAA Regionals In Final Day At Ram Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond track and field squad finished off its first event of the outdoor season Saturday at the VCU Rams Invitational at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va. Richmond's women garnered an impressive seven Top-10 finishes in the second day, including two NCAA Regional qualifying marks in the javelin. Senior Brett Walton wrapped up his first title of the 2005 season by garnering 5,897 points in the decathlon.
Junior Danielle Eaton (58.82) and sophomore Nicole Erby (58.94) finished sixth and seventh, respectively in the 400 meters. Senior Margaret Banks came in 14th in the event with a 1:00.69. Eaton, juniors Amy Thesing and Diana Morse and Erby teamed to win the 3200 meter relay title with a time of 9:22.11.
Senior Jennifer Coles wrapped up an 11th and 12th place finish in the 100 and 200 meter races, respectively. She ran a 12.84 in the 100 and a 27.21 in the 200. Banks was not far behind Coles in the 200 meters with a 17th-place finish and a time of 27.62.
In the field events, Richmond's sophomore trio was outstanding once again. Lindsey Smith garnered seventh-place honors in the shot put with a toss of 39-04.00. Leslie Gleue came in 24th with a 33-07.25. In the discus, Gleue placed fourth with a 124-04.00. Smith and Beth Crocus both earned NCAA Regional qualifying marks in the javelin after finishing first and third, respectively. Smith launched a throw of 150-07.00 to break her own school record set last season. Crocus uncorked a toss of 143-00.00 which was not far behind.
On the men's side sophomore Rusty Burrell finished third in the high jump with a height of 6-02.75. Burrell, along with freshmen Ryan Jobes and Doug Rubin and sophomore Brian Gildea combined for a seventh-place finish in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 3:26.88.
Freshman Adedayo Oladejo notched 21st (11.43) and 39th-place (24.37) finishes in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. Jobes led three Spiders in the 400 meter distance with a 16th-place finish in 50.74. Burrell (51.73) and Gildea (52.12) each finished 25th and 29th, respectively in the event.
Freshman Neil Slotterback logged a throw of 152-00.00 in the javelin to place 10th.
Senior Brett Walton finished first in the decathlon with a total of 5,897 points. Yesterday the Bridgewater, Va., native recorded a height of 6-06.00 in the high jump to win the event and place his name in a tie for the school record jump of 6-06.00 currently held by five individuals as long ago as 1968.
Richmond returns to action next weekend when it hosts the Fred Hardy Invitational at the Fred Hardy Track and Field Facility at First Market Stadium on the Richmond campus. Results and recaps will be available at RichmondSpiders.com following the action Friday-Saturday, March 25-26, in Richmond, Va.
