Maryland Leads, Spiders Third After First Day Of Spider Spring Invitational

BRADENTON, Fla. - Maryland sophomore Katie Stepanek shot an even-par 72 in the first round of the 2005 Spider Spring Invitational and leads by five strokes heading into tomorrow's final round at The Legacy Golf Club at Lakewood Ranch. Stepanek and the Terrapins carded a first-round 319, five strokes better than second-place Montana.
Stepanek shot a tournament-low 35 on the front nine and leads the event with four birdies after 18 holes. She was minus-two on par-5's and one-under on par-4 holes. Montana's Krista Swanson and Mary Hasselberg, along with Richmond's Ally Caffrey and McNeese State's Hannah Bagwell are tied for second after firing a 77 on the first day. Hasselberg posted three birdies, second only to Stepanek, today.
The host Spiders carded a tournament-high 46 pars in the first round. In addition to Caffrey's second-place effort, sophomore Ashley Lambert, a Bradenton native, garnered the Spiders' other top-10 finish (sixth) with a 78. Richmond is third after firing a 325 on Monday.
The rest of the field follows with McNeese State (327) in fourth, Siena in fifth (353) and The Citadel in sixth (361).
NOTES: First-round leader Maryland tied for third at the 2004 Spider Spring Invitational ... The Terrapins shot a 318 on the first day last year ... Maryland was the highest ranked team (#95) heading into the tournament ... Maryland and Montana are tied for the tournament lead with eight birdies.
