BRADENTON, Fla. - The University of Maryland women's golf team fired a tournament-low 308 in today's second round to win the 2005 Spider Spring Invitational, played at The Legacy Golf Club at Lakewood Ranch on Monday and Tuesday. The Terrapins, who carded a tournament-best 22 birdies, shot a 627 (319-308) at the event.
Krista Swanson, a sophomore from runner-up Montana, captured the individual medal with a 152 (77-75) at the par-72 course. She finished one stroke better than first-round leader Katie Stepanek (72-81) and Kelly Calkin (81-72), both from Maryland. Stepanek, who led the field with seven birdies, and Calkin both carded the lowest round of the tournament with an even-par 72.
Freshman Ally Caffrey, from host Richmond (77-79), tied with McNeese State's Lisa Westman (79-77) for fourth place. Westman played a tournament-high 27 pars over the two rounds.
Following Maryland and Montana (324-313--637) was Richmond (325-323--648) in third, McNeese State (327-327--654) in fourth, Siena (353-327--680) in fifth and The Citadel (361-337--698) in sixth.

Today's 308 is Maryland's second lowest round in their two-year history at the event. It fired a 304 in the second round last year ... Swanson won the Invitational at +8, while last year's champion, Becky Berzonski from UNC Wilmington, was +3 ... Ally Caffrey's tie for fourth is the best finish by a Spider in the two years of the Invitational.
