RICHMOND, Va. - Trying to improve on last year's second-place finish, third-year head coach LaRee Sugg and her squad will compete against seven other teams for the 2005 CAA Women's Golf Championship at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. from April 15-17.
Sugg will depend on her record-breaking freshman, Natasha Lopez Moreira, who have led Richmond at eight of the nine events this season. Sophomore Ashley Lambert has played well recently, leading the team and tying for 13th at Richmond's most recent event, the Lady Seahawk Invitational.
Caffrey, who set the program record for lowest round (70) and best three rounds (220), leads the team with a 77.5 scoring average in 25 rounds. Lopez Moreira, who is second with a 77.9 average, earned a third-place finish at the Miccosukee Championship, tied for the highest finish of the season with Caffrey's third at the Yale Fall Intercollegiate.
An All-Conference honoree last year, Lambert is third on the team with an 81.3 scoring average. However, she has carded five consecutive sub-80 rounds, and posted a season-low 78 in four of those five.
Junior Lauren Ritter, another All-Conference honoree after tying for third at last year's championship, and classmates Whitney McComis and Lesley Monachino have also contributed to this year's team.
The event tees off at 9 a.m. Friday through Sunday on the Old Course. The Spiders are the third highest ranked team, UNC Wilmington is first and James Madison second, entering the Championship.
