HOT SPRINGS, Va. - Richmond freshman Ally Caffrey carded a one-over-par 73 and is tied for second, one stroke behind leader Becky Berzonski of UNC Wilmington, after the first round at the 2005 CAA Championships. The Spiders' 308 placed them second, four strokes back of leader and defending champion James Madison, with two rounds to play at The Homestead.
Caffrey, who shot more than four strokes below her season average on Friday, is one of three Spiders in the top-5. Sophomore Ashley Lambert, an All-Conference honoree last spring, fired a season-best 74 and is fourth after the first day.
Freshman Natasha Lopez Moreira, second on the squad coming in, shot a 75 and is tied for fifth. Junior Lauren Ritter is tied for 27th with a first-round 86, while classmate Lesley Monachino notched a 93 on Friday.
The second round will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday while the find round will be played on Sunday.
Quotes from third-year head coach LaRee Sugg:
"Today, I was extremely proud the way my team carried itself. They were composed and fought for each and every shot."
"I was especially pleased with the performance of both freshmen, Natasha Lopez Moreira. They are continuing our tradition of outstanding play during post-season events."
"The next two days will be a battle. For such a young program we are proud to be in the hunt."
"The next two days will be fun. I know we have what it takes to come out on top. We just have to see what the golf Gods have in store for us."
