Spiders Garner Four Event Wins At Metro Championships

EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Richmond track and field squad picked up four event wins at the Metro Championships, Saturday, April 23 in Emmitsburg, Md., on the Mt. St. Mary's College campus. The women garnered a win in the 5000 meters, 3000 meter steeplechase and discus, while junior John Ciccarelli won the men's 3000 meter steeplechase.
Freshmen Kate Merrill (18:38.82) and Diane Kenaston finished first and sixth in the 5000 meters, respectively. Kenaston's time was a personal best at 19:03.84. Junior Nicole Kurtain and freshman Shelby Faircloth took part in the 3000 meter steeplechase for the first time this season. Kurtain notched a first-place finish with an 11:16.07 and Faircloth came in fourth in 12:14.18.
In the field events sophomore Leslie Gleue earned three season-best marks. In the shot put Gleue went 35-08.75 to place fifth. She earned top honors in the discus with a toss of 132-07, and picked up a third-place finish in the hammer with a throw of 126-09.
Freshman Ryan Jobes finished sixth in the 400 meter with a personal best time of 50.10. Freshman Andrew Harris bettered his time in the 110 meter hurdles from last weekend. The two-sport athlete ran a 15.61 and earned sixth-place honors.
Sophomore Rusty Burrell took part in the 400 meter hurdles and came in fourth with a season-best time of 1:01.11. Ciccarelli, competing unattached, ran a 9:32.09 in the 3000 meter steeplechase to win the event nearly 20 seconds in front of the second-place finisher.
Richmond's 400 meter relay team of Harris, freshman Doug Rubin, junior Ryan Mace and senior Joe Mallory finished fourth with a season-best time of 42.34.
Senior Brett Walton and Mallory recorded season-bests in two field events. Walton went 10-08.00 in the pole vault to earn a fifth-place finish, and Mallory jumped 23-04.50 in the long jump to finish third.
The team will continue its outdoor season next weekend at the Penn Relays, April 28-30, in Philadelphia, Pa.
