Spider Thrower Qualifies For NCAA Championships

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Sophomore thrower Lindsey Smith placed fifth at the NCAA East Regional Saturday, May 28, in the javelin to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Smith's toss of 153-07 (46.82m) broke the Spiders' all-time record by three inches and placed her fifth overall in the event.
Sophomore Beth Crocus just missed consideration for the NCAA Championships with a ninth-place finish in the javelin Saturday afternoon. Crocus threw 147-04 as a member of the final flight. Crocus, who won the Atlantic 10 Championships hammer throw, also participated in the NCAA East Region's hammer event. The Bethlehem, Pa., native tossed the hammer 156-09 during Friday's competition to place 23rd overall.
Sophomore Nicole Erby, another Atlantic 10 Championships winner - 800 meters, took part in the NCAA East Regional meet. The Carlisle, Pa., native ran a 2:19.15 in Friday's preliminary heats, but did not qualify for Saturday's finals.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif. Smith, with her fifth-place finish in the regional event, qualifies for the NCAA's at-large pool for the event. Richmond sophomore Amanda Russell provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10K earlier this season. The North Bay, Ontario, native turned in a 35:07.09 at the Duke Invitational to place second.
