WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Richmond women's soccer team fell short 2-1 at George Washington in an overtime battle on Friday afternoon. Junior Christine Wrublesky scored the Spiders' only goal on Friday as the Colonials registered their first A-10 victory of the season.
The Spiders and the Colonials (8-5-0 overall, 1-2 in the A-10) played through a scoreless first half, with the Colonials registering four shots against the Spiders' zero opportunities.
The second half saw a George Washington goal less than three and a half minutes into play (53:28). The Colonials' Lauren Kelly sent a free kick to the far post where teammate Kierra Colker connected on a volley into the corner of the net to give George Washington a 1-0 lead.
Richmond's Jen Ruhe assisted Wrublesky on the equalizer 24 minutes later (77:28), putting the Spiders on the board and knotting the game, 1-1. The goal was Wrublesky's first on the season and the third of her career.
Wrublesky was able to get in one more shot before the final whistle; however, it went wide of the goal post and the teams headed into overtime.
The teams played through over eight more minutes of scoreless action before George Washington's Nicole Trickett put an end to the game at the 98:13 mark, gathering a loose ball and blasting it from outside the box for the game-winning goal and a 2-1 Colonials' advantage.
Sophomore Kate Hudson notched one save in goal for the Spiders, while George Washington's Amie Kern registered one save in goal during the contest.
The Spiders (1-9-2, 1-2 in the A-10) will resume action in Philadelphia, Pa. this Sunday when they will face La Salle at 1:00 p.m. Led by Dana Giordano with four goals and one assist, the Explorers (4-7-0, 1-1 in the A-10) have won three of their last five games.
The Spiders control the Richmond-La Salle series, holding a 3-2 advantage. The two teams last met in 2004 in Richmond where the Spiders shut out the Explorers, 2-0.
