UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond men's golf coach Adam Decker announced the signing of local product Sam Beach to a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period.
Beach is a senior at Deep Run High School in nearby Glen Allen, Va. and will being play for the Spiders in the fall of 2007. He was a teammate of current Spider freshman Hunter Townsend and is Decker's third Richmond-area signee, joining Townsend and sophomore Tim Courtney.
"I am very pleased to have Sam joining the program next year," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "He has enjoyed a fine junior career and has the ability to contribute to the success of the team immediately. Being from the Richmond area, it will hopefully be an easy transition for him."
Beach was named All-State, all-district, all-region, All-Metro and was the team MVP as a senior. It was his third year earning All-Metro. He helped Deep Run to three-consecutive VHSL AAA state titles with Townsend and a state runner-up finish this year.
Beach was a VSGA Virginia/West Virginia team member for three years and a VSGA Virginias/Carolinas team member for two years. His father Bill was an All-American football player at Wittenberg University (1978-82) and his brother Blake is on the University of North Carolina men's soccer team, having started for his first three seasons in Chapel Hill.
The Spiders are looking to make a return trip to the NCAA Golf Championships and are returning all but one of their players from the 2006-07 team that earned a spot in the NCAA Regionals. Decker was named Virginia State GCA Coach of the Year in 2006-07, his first season as head coach of the Spiders.
Richmond opens the spring season Feb. 17-18 at the Rice Intercollegiate at Willowsip Country Club in Houston, Texas.
