LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Richmond men and women's track & field team made its 2006-07 indoor season debut on Saturday with several personal best performances at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational, including a school record for senior Beth Crocus in the weight throw.
Crocus won the weight throw with a new school record toss of 55-feet-7 1/2, beating her old school record of 53-11 from last winter.
Freshman Kristen Crawford placed second in the shot put with a heave of 44-5 1/2 and finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 45-1 1/2.
"It's great to see Beth come right out and get the school record, she beat her old PR by almost two feet," Richmond head women's coach Lori Taylor said. "We're excited about Kristen finishing second in the shot put, and in the weight because it's the first time she's ever thrown it."
Sophomore Paloma Krakower was the runner-up in the 800-meter run in 2:25.65.
"We're moving her up to the 800 this year," Taylor said. "She won the slower heat and beat everybody except one girl in the fast heat with her time. That was really a great race for her."
Freshman Jasmine Cottle placed sixth in the 400 dash in 59.89 seconds, while freshman Monique Hawkins took ninth in 1:00.81 and junior Tara Markey was 13th in 1:01.62.
Freshman Megan Ney took 10th in the long jump, leaping 17-feet-0.
"That's a really good effort for her," Taylor said. "We're excited about that, she will help us in at the conference meet in the long jump."
Freshman Kerry Kelly made the finals in the 60 hurdles with a preliminary time of 9.85 seconds and took 11th in the finals in 9.93. Sophomore Stephanie Lapp took 15th in the weight throw (31-6).
"It was a good day today, a good opportunity and start for our big group of freshmen that had their first chance to compete," Taylor said. "The freshmen got in and competed, it was a good chance to get the nerves out."
On the men's side, the Spiders finished second, third and fourth in the mile run, with all three Spider runners posting personal best times.
Sophomore Derek Jensen was the runner-up in the mile in 4:26.08, beating his old PR of 4:44. Sophomore Greg Hoffman took third in 4:26.79, chopping six seconds off his old PR of 4:32. Sophomore Sean McKinney finished fourth in 4:27.58, trimming his old personal best time of 4:31.
"We traveled a very small group on the men's side, but it was a good day for us," Richmond head men's coach Steve Taylor said. "It was a really good effort on those guys part, they ran competitively. It was a move up in distance for Jensen and Greg, those guys were mostly 800 meter runners prior to this year, but they handled it extremely well. McKinney is a pure distance guy, a 5K to 10K guy, and he moved down and ran very well."
Richmond does not compete again until Jan. 20 at the Maryland Invitational.
