HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Richmond men's golf team completed its first tournament of the spring season Tuesday, taking 10th out of 14 teams at the Rice Intercollegiate.
The Spiders entered the final round tied for fourth and carded a 311 to finish the tournament at 912, two strokes behind ninth-place Sam Houston State, three strokes behind eighth-place Miami (Ohio) and four back from seventh-place Louisiana-Monroe.
Santa Clara won the event with an 889, while Coloroado State took second at 894 and host Rice was third at 898.
"This was the first tournament coming out of the winter, but we're obviously disappointed in the drop from fourth to 10th in the last round," Decker said. "We have some things that we found that we need to work on as we prepare for the rest of the season."
Richmond freshman Tim Courtney (Midlothian, Va.) shot a 10-over par 80 in the final round to finish the tournament in a tie for 12th at 14-over-par 224. Courtney was tied for the lead after the first two rounds (70-74).
Sophomore Chris Bagley (Charlotte, N.C.) finished 32nd with a 228 (78-73-77). Sophomore Billy Hanes (Elma, N.Y.) and junior John Pelet (Atglen, Pa.) finished in a tie for 48th with 233. Hanes went 74-78-81 and Pelet shots 74-78-81. Sophomore Jordan Utley (Richmond, Va.) took 71st with a 242 (73-87-82).
"Each one of the guys identified things individually and as a team that we can work on," Decker said. "We have to learn from it and move on."
Richmond returns to action March 9-11 at the Birkdale Collegiate Golf Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
