
Track & Field Posts Eight Top-3 Finishes At VCU Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond track team completed its outdoor season-opening meet Saturday highlighted by a second place finish by senior Danielle Eaton in the 400-meter dash at the VCU Invitational at Sports Backers Park.
Eaton was the runner-up in the 400 in a time of 58.95 seconds, while freshman Jasmine Major took third in the 100 hurdles in 14.81 seconds. Major had the top time in the preliminaries of the 100 dash (12.24), but did not run in the finals.
The Spiders had seven top-3 finishes on the women's side at the VCU Invitational, including the 4x800 relay team finishing second in a time of 9:41.90. The 4x800 relay team included Eaton, senior Amy Thesing, freshman Emily Nagle and freshman Lisa Sinkovitz.
On Friday, junior Amy Thesing finished second in the 400 hurdles. Crocus and Smith's throws in the javelin were NCAA Regional qualifying marks, and both set personal bests in the hammer.
Smith finished fourth in the shot put Saturday with a heave of 12.76 meters, while Crocus took 20th with a toss of 10.83 meters.
Richmond had three runners place in the top-7 in the 400. Joining runner-up Eaton was sophomore Tara Markey in sixth place in 1:00.68 and Thesing in seventh in 1:00.70. Freshman Paloma Krakower finished 15th in the event in 1:02.36.
Krakower also finished 14th in the 200 in 27.27 seconds. Markey was 23rd (28.04), freshman Angelene Cicero was 30th (28.21) and freshman Stephanie Lapp took 40th (29.29).
Freshman Karen Guthrie was 14th in the 1,500 in 4:55.28, sophomore Kylee Schuler took 19th in 4:59.91 and senior Diane Morse finished 25th in 5:05.66. Sinkovitz took 17th in the 800 run (2:28.13) and Nagle followed in 18th (2:28.52).
On the men's side Saturday, the 4x800 relay team of Jeff Strojny, freshman Greg Hoffman, sophomore Brendan Regan and freshman Sean Welsh finished second in 8:05.01. Junior Rusty Burrell took seventh in the high jump, clearing 1.85 meters and Hoffman placed 11th in the 800 run in 2:01.37.
In the 400, Strojny was 32nd (52.27), Burrell took 39th (53.49), sophomore David Delaplaine finished 44th (53.72), Regan was 49th (54.83) and freshman Sean Welsh took 53rd (55.32).
Richmond returns to action Friday and Saturday when it hosts the 2nd Annual Fred Hardy Invitational at the Fred Hardy Track at First Market Stadium.
