
Hunter Townsend Signs National Letter Of Intent With Richmond

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond men's golf coach Adam Decker announced the signing of local product Hunter Townsend to a National Letter of Intent.Townsend, the No. 2 ranked high school senior in the state of Virginia, will begin playing for the Spiders as a freshman this fall.
The Glen Allen, Va. native was a four-year team MVP and two-time team captain at Deep Run High, leading his squad to three-consecutive Virginia AAA state championships from 2003-2005. He was the 2005 Metro Player of the Year and was a three-time selection to the Richmond Times-Dispatch All-Metro team.
Townsend was named All-State as both a junior and senior and was a three-time All-Central Region selection and four-time All-Colonial District honoree.
"Hunter had a superb junior career, and we're excited for him to get on board," Decker said.
Townsend was named a Future Collegiate World Tour All-American and a Plantation Junior Golf Tour All-American. He was the captain of the 2005 Virginias/Carolinas Junior Team. As a senior at Deep Run High, Townsend had a 71.0 stroke average.
He was the 2005 Virginia Junior Match Play champion and the runner-up at the 2004 Virginia Junior Amateur Championship. Townsend qualified for the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, was the 2003 Bobby Bowers Memorial champion, and was a two-time junior club champion at the Dominion Club.
The honor roll student also is a finalist for the 2005-06 Lexus of Richmond Pursuit of Perfection Leadership Award, awarded to to scholar-athlete who also possesses leadership, citizenship and community service. He was a four-time Academic All-Central Region honoree and a three-time Academic All-Colonial District selection.
Richmond earned its fourth-ever NCAA Championship berth and first since 2001 when the Spiders earned a bid to the 2006 NCAA East Regional. The Spiders finished fourth at the Atlantic 10 Championship and won two tournament titles in Decker's first year as head coach. The Spiders lose just one contributor off of the 2005-06 team.
