KITTY HAWK, N.C. - Senior Jordan Utley shot a 3-under-par 67 which has him in a tie for first and the Richmond men's golf team is in third place out of 21 teams after the first round of the ODU/Seascape Invitational played Monday.
Utley was one of three players to fire 67s on the par-70, 6,131-yard Seascape Golf Club. The Richmond, Va. native, who finished third last week at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational at 2-under par, has shot two-straight rounds under 70 and four-straight rounds at even-par or better.
"Jordan has been playing extremely well the past two weeks," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "He's been through this before and came out successful, so hopefully he can pull out the victory."
Utley will be going for the second individual title of his career in Tuesday's final round. He won the Joe Agee Invitational at Stonehouse Golf Club in Williamsburg last fall. Richmond could pull off the rare feet of having individual champions in back-to-back tournaments. Spider sophomore Hunter Townsend won the Hoya Invitational last Tuesday at the Members Club at Four Streams.
The Spiders shot an 8-over-par 288 in the first round and are just five strokes behind Wofford (283) for first place. Hartford is in second place at 284, while Elon is in fourth (291), and Campbell and Old Dominion are in a tie for fifth (292).
Richmond junior Tim Courtney shot a 1-under 69 and is tied for fourth, while sophomore Robert Lindstrom is tied for 24th at 3-over 73. Townsend is tied for 74th after shooting a 79 and junior Grant Rafield is tied for 97th at 83.
The second and final round of the ODU/Seascape Invitational will be played Tuesday.
