Men's Golf In Third Entering Final Round Of William & Mary Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Junior Jordan Utley is tied for ninth and the Richmond men's golf team is in third after the first round of the 36-hole William & Mary Invitational, played Monday at the par-71, 6,432 yard Plantation Course at Kingsmill Resort.
The second and final round will be played on Tuesday on Kingsmill's River Course, site of the LPGA's Michelob Ultra Open. Richmond begins teeing off at 9:35 a.m.
Richmond shot a 12-over-par 290 which puts the Spiders three strokes behind St. John's (287) and 11 shots behind the leader Campbell (279) in the 21-team event.
"It was a good start today," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We have some ground to make up on the leaders, but we're looking forward to doing that tomorrow."
Utley shot a 1-under-par 71, going 1-under on the front nine and even on the back to lead the Spiders. He sits four shots off the leader, Campbell's Fredric Sundberg, who shot a 5-under 67. Delaware's Joe Mclister and Detroit's Mikhial Pasic each shot 3-under 69s and five players came in at 2-under 70.
Sophomore Tim Courtney is tied for 12th at even-par 72, going 1-under on the front and 1-over on the back. Senior John Pelet is also in the top-20, tied for 19th at 1-over 73 (36-37).
Sophomore Grant Rafield is tied for 26th at 2-over 74. Rafield shot 4-over 40 on the front nine, but rebounded for a 2-under 34 on the back nine. Junior Billy Hanes is tied for 57th with a 77 (38-39).
