BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Richmond men's golf team finished sixth out of 15 teams at the Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic held Monday and Tuesday at Keith Hills Country Club No. 1.
The Spiders were tied for third after shooting a 298 in the first round Monday, but a 311 on Tuesday gave Richmond a total of 609.
"We were O.K. with our first round play and we were hoping to make a move today," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We were only five shots off of the lead, hoping to put some pressure on the leaders, but we went the other way. "
Senior Jordan Utley led the Spiders, tying for 11th place. He shot a 1-under 71 on the par-72, 6,703-yard course in the first round Monday and a 5-over 77 on Tuesday to finish at 148.
Senior John Pelet tied for 20th at 7-over-par 151 (73-78). Junior Billy Hanes and sophomore Grant Rafield tied for 35th with 155s. Hanes shot rounds of 76 and 79, while Rafield went 78-77. Junior Chris Bagley tied for 44th at 157 (78-79).
"It was a pretty poor finish over the last five or six holes," Decker said. "We are going to get back to practicing and look forward to finish strong in the next event."
Richmond returns to action March 26-27 at the William & Mary Invitational.
